"Flames in Wedding Dresses"
The Flames did an afternoon trip to a local thrift shop, and these two sisters were found in an upstairs room of the shop gleefully trying on party dresses and wedding dresses. They each bought the ones they're wearing here.
"Peeling Potatoes"
The cooks needed 40 lbs of potatoes peeled in a hurry, put them out on a table with a bevy of peelers and paring knives, and asked for help.

Ben, Theo, and Nate created this diarama. Can you guess the story?

"Found Behind the Books"
During a Work Weekend clean out of the bookshelves in Whitehead Hall, behind the books on an upper shelf, we found the stem of an unfound banana from last year's Banana Hunt! That's all that's left of it. I hope the mice enjoyed the banana! ;D

"Unusual Hat Day!"
"Slacker!"
Sure looks like he's slacking to me.
Many people noticed during vFNCA 2020 that the black word on Trevor's sign changed every day. A few times it was even a topic of conversation before the actual event began. *hee hee hee*
"Purple Day 2019"
We had been having Tie Dye Day for several years when Jesse White asked, "Why can't we have a Purple Day, too?" So we do, one one week and the other the other week.
"Dan Dyer is This Year's Winner
of the Carmen Miranda Earrings!"
At the Sales Table Auction each year, we auction off the 1-year rental of not one, but two(2!) pairs of Carmen Miranda fruit compote earrings. Here's Dan Dyer modelling the newer set.

"Onions / No Onions"
One of our regular campers is allergic to onions, so foods are ofter labelled. These two pictures were taken on opposite sides of the buffet.

"The Carmen Miranda Earrings!"
Nina Sasser (playing the part of Carol Merrill) poses with the FNCA's Carmen Miranda fruit compote earrings. These delightful gems are in the Sales Table Auction each year. The person with the winning bid wins the rights to them for a year but must bring them back the following summer. Over the past several decades, the Carmen Miranda earrings have raised well over $1,000 for the Assembly!
"Denyse-in-a-Tree"
At the top of Jockey Cap, Denyse Daurat couldn't resist climbing this tree "because it's just so possible," she's quoted as saying.
"In the Shade at Jockey Cap"
It was very hot that day.
"Sam's Hiding Place"
For the Spark Hunt / Flame Hunt, Sam Reed "hid" by chimneying up these two trees. Since the Sparks had to actually tag him to catch him, he thought he was safe.
(He wasn't.)
"Officer Alex Trying to Make a Sale"
When Officer Alex is the Sales Table Auction auctioneer, he doesn't mess around! Here's the long view and the close up of him trying to entice Nancy Little with a fine piece of jewelry. (By the way, these two photos were taken nearly simultaneously --- you can't see it, but Trevor's little digital camera is in his right hand in the upper photo.)

"Old Pantry Sign"
Several Flames and young adults were amused to discover this old sign in the pantry that lists the old waitress schedule from the pre-1980 days when the female Flames waited tables and the male Flames did the the dishes and all the Flames ate together in the kitchen ½ hour before meals. The girls had to report 15 minutes early to set the tables. Wonder what the penalty was for being late?
(By the way, there's another sign of the same vintage and handwriting that shows the proper way to arrange a place setting.)

"Little Mtn"
This is only fun or funny if you know her name is Nancy Little. This photo was taken at the "mountain finder" on top of Jockey Cap Mountain in Fryeburg ME. (And the concept of Jockey Cap being called a mountain is only fun or funny if you know it only takes 10 minutes to get to the top!)
"Laces"
Emily Woofenden(l) and Beki Greenwood(r) with their really high hightop lace-up sneakers made a big splash one day at camp!
"Don't Wash Me"
Love the message; hate the grime!

"Pop's Parking Space"
© Kristina Madjerac 2009 When the Rev. Dr. Wm. R. "Pop Woof" Woofenden broke his leg the first day of camp in 1983, he decided to reserve himself the parking space nearest to his cabin. In typical Pop fashion, he found a piece of a board, wrote on it in marker, and nailed it to a tree. The next year, it was already grandfathered in, so he continued to park there each year for well over a decade until he was no longer able to drive. Pop passed on in 2012; the sign, however, is still there.

"The Colgateville Pigs"
© Ian Woofenden 2009
For decades, Colgate Searle has been working on a miniature village at camp, quietly creating all the pieces during lectures in the lecture hall. When he sets up "Colgate- ville" for a few days each year, it's always a big sensation!
The village has grown from just a few modest buildings to include town hall, church, blacksmith shop, covered bridge, sawmill, army tent, and other delights. The latest addition is a pig sty complete with hand-carved pigs.
"Seventeen and a Sandwich"
He's posing (although he continued to read it for quite a while). She's barely controlling her laughter (although she managed not to spray food all over the place).

"The Claxton Computer Lav"
© Nancy F. Little 2008
One corner of the Claxton Cabin is just close enough to the modem in the Main Building to pick up the Assembly's Wifi --- it just happens that that corner is in the bathroom! So here's Beki Greenwood hard at work cheerfully doing her daily telecommute not in a computer lab but in the Claxton Computer Lav.
NOTE: Just a few years after this, we highly amped up our Wifi and it now reaches the whole camp, including the entire Claxton Cabin.
"Mask"
Ruby Blackman proudly walked around displaying her new mask for quite a while that day.

"Alex's Head"
© Tobin Grams 2007Whenever the Flames go to the beach, it's virtually inevitable that one of them will get buried in the sand. In this case, it's Alex Dyer being covered by Ross Grams (l) and Josh Cook (r). That's Ben Gram behind them fishing through his bag and Troy Grams's colorful bathing suit and muscular legs.

"Initiation 1996:
© Trevor 1973 & Todd Woofenden 1995 One of the many wonderful New Games we play at camp is the incomparable Lap Sit: everyone stands in a very, very tight circle and then they all sit down on everyone's lap together in unison! That's the Flames during Flames Games in 1973 on the left, and an even dozen Woof cousins with Uncle Ian in 1995 on the right.

"Everything's for Sale"
This may not look like a funny photo, but it was a funny moment. Don Foster (r) was running the Sales Table Auction and said, "Everything's for sale, even the shirt on my back." And Ben Philibert (l) said, "$5!" After a brief bidding war, Ben ended up buying the shirt off Don's back!

"Dry Run on the Old Rope Swing"
© Andrew Dole
For years, before the old rope swing came down, it was traditional among the younger generation to traipse down to the river in their Sunday Best after church and do fully-clothed "dry runs" on the rope swing before lunch. It also was not at all unusual for someone to do a dry run during regular swimming hours, like this guy here (who we think is either Pete Little or Kenny Condon).

"Woofs - 4 Views"
Being the Woofendens that they are, after taking the official family photo for Mom & Pop Woof's 40th anniversary at the top (sorry for the poor quality), the family also presented three more family views. In age order left to right, that Pop, Mom, Ross, Jane, Laura, Trevor, Ian, Lee, Ellen, Todd.

"Lawn Tennis at the FNCA"
The original plans for the Assembly (which have hung in the Dole Wing for decades) included grass tennis courts on the back field. Here's a foursome playing sometime in the late 1920s or very early 1930s, most likely in 1930. You may not be be able to tell from the picture at this size, but Route 302 going by just beyond the rows of small pine trees beyond the tennis court is a dirt road!
